Prevention & Wellness

Prevention and wellness is an important part of today’s healthcare. At Scarborough Family Medicine, we empower patients to make well-informed decisions that are core to achieving your healthcare goals.

Conditions that can be prevented or diagnosed at the earliest stages can save lives. Screenings for substance abuse and dependence are also an important part of health intervention and guidance. Prevention and Wellness recommendations change over time, based on each life stage.

In children, vision and hearing screening, developmental milestones are an important part of the check-up along with immunization and healthy weight evaluation.

During the teen years, social, sexual and mental health and injury prevention become a part of screening services. As adults, screening for healthy weight continues along with screenings for the most common conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders and diabetes are screened.

Screening tests for mammograms and prostate screening begin at age 40 and the screening colonoscopy is recommended for most patients at age 50. Other screening tests are recommended as the need arises depending on family history, occupation and age. As we age, heart disease, diabetes and cancer screening become more important as these are the top three causes for mortality.
